Ready to Wow Your Friends and Family This Holiday Season? Don’t Forget…

It’s that time of year again. The leaves are changing, the air is getting colder, Daylight savings is right around the corner and a new year is upon us, again…

“The excited feeling of impending doom…”

One of my most dreaded aspects of the holiday hurry is getting everything just perfect for our Friends and Family. We all crave that little sense of pride we get from knowing that our home is welcoming and ready to receive all the love and laughter that comes with the Holidays. But the idea of all the cleaning, the cooking, the shopping, the kids, the decorations almost makes me want to run for my life… In 2017 who has time anymore?

The exciting feeling of impending doom I feel the day before Thanksgiving is often akin to the feeling of panic that sets in right about the time I hit parking lot at Wal-Mart the day of the big TG grocery shop. Just knowing that I have a mile-long list of tasks to complete to get everything ready on top of the meal prep alone is enough to drive anyone into cold sweats at 2 am the day before. Not to mention Black Friday is the next day…

What your holiday home may be missing…

You worked all day, the day before (insert your holiday here) to get everything ready. Everything just perfect, Aunt Jeanie’s fruit cake is made, you doubled up on the green bean casserole fixings, got the berry filled cranberry sauce that only two people like, the turkey is thawing and only 4% of the kid’s toys are still in the living room.

But, what about the lawn and flower beds? Maybe there are leaves, 8” thick everywhere in the lawn, or the landscape looks like it hasn’t been touched since the pilgrims landed. Curb appeal is a huge factor in first impressions and a neat and tidy property exterior sets everything in motion and on the right track…

Freshen your Mulch…
Nothing is more visually appealing than a fresh layer of mulch installed in a well-manicured flower bed. There’s more to it than just aesthetics. Winter drought is a real thing and causes many problems in landscapes in every climate. The fall and winter are the best times for plants to develop their roots systems. Water is a big factor in this development and winter drought hinders the process. A 3” Layer of mulch helps hold in the little water that plants receive throughout the winter aiding in the process.

Lightly Prune, No Crape Murder

When properly cared for, crape myrtles make a beautiful winter shrub. Though leaf less this time of year their bronze, peeling bark gives them a unique look. Proper pruning of the old buds will leave the spindly curving branches uniform and even. The practice of cutting crape myrtles back to their bases is often used as a method to control their growth and compensate for the wrong plant being placed poorly in the first place.

Prune and Shape your Shrubbery…

Don’t overdo it. Only remove the stuff that is out of place to maintain the shape you’re after. Going wild on boxwoods in November is a bad idea… Loropetalum is blooming pink flowers now in the fall varieties but, the spring bloomers are most definitely going to be overgrown if not pruned within the last month. Pro Tip: Leave the prunings on the ground and mulch over them.

Clean your windows… Seriously go look at them…

Bugs. Dirt, Grime, Dog Nose Art, dust…If you have never had your windows professionally cleaned, you should consider it. Warn the dog and all the birds in the neighborhood though because the difference between a clean and dirty window is that a clean window literally disappears sometimes. When done the right way a professional window detailing job makes the entire home brighter.
